Mid semester Self-review and Analysis

ClINICAL OBJECTIVE:1 The nursing student will observe clinical preceptor's communication and negotiation skills with nursing staff,clinical supervisors,unit directors and other upper hospital staff.With these observations the student nurse will compare the preceptor's methololgy with principles of communication theory ,and how she incorporates these theories in her managerial duties. I have seen my preceptor interact with all the level of staff listed in my Ojectives.I have participated in staff meetings on every level listed and also have been present in a private meeting with the VP, another director and my preceptor.I was able to find multiple models of management but very few theories of communiction.I think that my preceptor uses seveal models in here style of management . In researching models of management she incoperates contemporary theories like the Quantum theory. This theory is based on the concept that reality is always shifting this requires a leader to have a fusion of trait,behavior and contingency approache(Sullivan,Decker,p.53).My preceptor also incorporates Minzberg model this model is conceptualized as a concentric circle of levels with the center being the manager(Sullivan,Decker,p.58). The managers job is to create the frame of the work needed to be done ,how it should be done and the purpose of the job.The manager communicates information and ,controls information to manage the staffs work .The manager leads encourage and enable the staff team to take action .Linking involves the managers relationship with netwoks outside the unit in order to exchange influence and relay needs .Doing is is the most concrete stage it involves directing changes,handeling problems and negotiating with external contracts(sullivan,Decker,P.59).Thinking back and reading previous blogs and these models she really does ido this on a day to day basis .I showed her my goals when we first began i don't know if she specifically could say that she uses these theories but she does. I have seen here negotiate with the VP about a floor that was supose to open and didn't and what to do with all those people hired for jobs that were not there but not reveal this informationto the staff at large . I have participated in conversations with mutiple suporvisers of the 4 units she is over and discussed projects for the unit for different accredidations .The use of large news print tablets to communicate with the staff and the staff interacting through verbal awritten word . The models listed above both have a strong componet of communication so I think I have meet this objective partially although more research is needed with communication theory. CLINICAL OBJECTIVE:2 The nurseing student will observe,correlate,and document management principles used by her preceptor when problem solving issues involving staff for each unit she is director of.I have been with my nurse manager on two occasions when she was problem solving issues involving here staff. Both times she used effective communication . I wrote in my blog about those experiences once was when several of the staff failed to communicate a med error to the MD in a timely manner and the other was about a late employee and the unit supervisor ideas about disapline.On the first accasion we went on a fact finding mission .We spoke with the supervisor of the unit we spoke with the nurse educator and finnally the VP .All this information was collected to define the problem,think about the problem objectively ,analyze the information ,develope solutions,make a decision and finnally implament the decision(Decker,Sullivan, p.113-116).I was not with my preceptor when she made a decision or implamented it but i did have the opurtunity here about some of the solutions .I think meet this clinical objective. PERSONAL OBJECTIVE:1 First personal ojective was to see what a manager does in a 12 to 16 hour day.I was able to attend meeting some more pertinent to the unit than others. Spent time with budgeting ,talk with multiple levels of staff about avarity of different topic.I have been fascinated and have enjoyed the experiencethus far. PERSONAL OBJECTIVE:2 I wanted to see effective methods of communications in a managerial position. I was able to observe my preceptor think before she spoke .It seemed she measured what she said to here staff and the VP. She listened and gave feedback after much thought .I was impressed and learned quit a bit. One way these objectives have fostered growth as a professional nurse is it has tought me to listen to those around me that I work with a be responsive by using refelective conversation . as i said i have enjoyed being with my preceptor just watching here work is informative.I think reading about management to answer my objectives has been interesting to compare with what my preceptor does in here role, and to compare them with my manager at work.
