1st Clinical Day
So Tuesday was my first clinical day .It started at 5am with a staff meeting for the Bone marrow transplant ICU .My preceptor has been the director over this unit for about 2 mo . This was a night shift staff meeting .One of the thing I observed was my preceptor interaction with the staff. She listened repeated what she heard but only after multiple staff members integrated their opinions, observations and, general thoughts on a given topic. She gave each person on the night shift an the agenda for the meeting the night before ,encouraging the staff to to think about topics and to address them in the morning .My preceptor utilized a number of methods to communicate with her staff .Another way was to post large news print paper pads all over the unit one was outside her office door it had list of broken things as they were repaired /addressed she or some marked through them .She used the usual e-mail and mailbox /flier type of communication commonly used in hospital settings but I definitely thought the big over sized pads were a very assessable.
This was just the begining of my day ,we attended 7 meeting the first day .I meet the VP of critical care , inpatient surgical services/oncology (she offered to be my mentor when I get my master clinical nurse specialist .I esspically enjoyed just listening to her ,I think she spoke in concept "speak"like" work re-design' ,because I was sitting there she told me what that meant .She said It was utilizing whats available and incorporating it into what you have and what your needs are .She also said listening people who do a specific job and there needs and thier solutions . She gave an example of when she was a manager and she had two unit clerks. One clerk was unable to answer the phone because there was only one phone available. The second clerk would have to jump up and look all around the nurses station to answer a second line. The clerk said, "we need a second phone". The manager thought, "no problem we'll get a phone". So she requesitioned for a phone a meer seventhousand dollars. because of the price, this was a problem, fortunately there was the phone in the spare room that all the staff use secretly. The solution utilizes, what you have on hand she used the spare phone.
Lots of eye opening experiences .
